कभी प्राचीन विश्व का सबसे समृद्ध और उन्नत क्षेत्र रहा मगध, जिसकी राजधानी पाटलिपुत्र (वर्तमान पटना) थी, एक ऐसा केंद्र बना जिसने संस्कृति, अर्थव्यवस्था और शासन में अद्वितीय प्रभाव डाला। मगध का प्रभाव प्रतीकात्मक रूप से मध्य एशिया, तुर्की, मध्य पूर्व, चीन, दक्षिण एशिया और जापान तक फैला था : व्यापार, ज्ञान और शासन के ज़रिए उसने कई सभ्यताओं को आकार दिया।
